The ability to bounce around and find the cleanest, warmest water there is is key this time of year. The water temps have been consistently in the mid to upper 40’s But that is quickly changing. Certain sections of the rivers are pushing 60 degrees Fly choices depend on where you are bottom bouncing to swimming patterns have been working.

The first couple times down the river in 19 went well. Cfs is flowing 9300ish, 4-6 inches of visibility, water temps mid 40’s Low and slow with big dark flies worked like they always do this time of year. The birds are out in full force, turtles are sunning and the beavers are busy. I have this Sunday the 24th open if anyone wants it.

From the sounds of it on the news winter is over! The boats will be back on the rivers next week. I have prime pre spawn dates open in both March and April. If you like big smallmouth per spawn is the time to get them. Get your day on the calendar while there is still openings.

I met RT a long time ago, prior to his movie Zero to Hero. Last winter we ran into each other and he says “I’m doing this smallmouth thing”, “yes I want in” was my reply. Well the smallmouth “thing” is out and is amazing. For now it’s only on DVD the streamed version will be out soon. The streamer event of the year took place this past weekend in Cotter Arkansas at Dally’s flyshop. If you don’t know about the lovefest it’s a gathering of big name tyers from all over the county. Names like Galloup, Johnson, Schmidt, Strolis, and I am fortunate enough to be included in this list. Along with the tying event at the shop all of us streamer junkies invade the White River in search of it’s monster browns that like killing their food. As always the river and the week didn’t disappoint, a great time was had by all. A huge thank you goes out to the entire Dally shop crew for the efforts they put forth having us invade their watershed.

I met RT a looooong time ago. Rt made Zero to Hero, The Brothers Brown, and Spey Daze. We fished Lake Michigan chatted and parted ways. 9 years later we bump into each other and he says “hey man I’m doing this smallmouth thing” the answer was a quick YES! I have the privilege to be among the best guides in the midwest to apart of his latest flyfishing film called Summer Haze. Captain Katz and myself went for a early showing and I can say, Holy hell it’s awsome and we who live in the midwest have great smallmouth fishing in our backyards. It’s that time of the year when reports become spread out and kinda blah. Steelhead fishing has been far from good this year. The water temps were great for a long time, water color was fabulous, the leaves weren’t a issue. This is the game we play with migratory fish on the bottom end of the lake. Now that the temps have tanked it’s time to focus on refilling the boxes for next season along with getting to travel and tie at some pretty cool events. I recently got a new water scouting buddy (he’s a good pup). I understand that people aren’t thinking about booking trips with Christmas coming BUT, my calendar is filling and I do have gift certificates available for that special someone.
